Xash (Khash) Խաշ
The Morning After "Cure"
Xash is one of Armenia’s oldest and most beloved traditional dishes – a slow-cooked, dawn-time soup that carries centuries of culture in every fragrant sip. Historically prepared by shepherds and villagers during the cold months, Xash was once considered a symbol of hospitality and strength. Families and friends gather early in the morning to enjoy it together, often around a long table filled with lavash, garlic, radish, and, of course, good company.
In Armenian culture, Xash isn’t just food – it’s an experience. Preparing it takes patience, respect, and time; enjoying it is almost a ritual. It is said that Xash warms the bones, clears the mind, and restores the spirit, which is why Armenians proudly joke that it’s the “cure for everything.”
And yes… Xash holds legendary status as the all-miraculous “morning-after” remedy. For generations, Armenians have sworn that a steaming bowl of Xash can bring anyone back to life after a long night of celebration. As the saying goes: “If Xash can’t fix you – nothing can.”
A dish this iconic isn’t simply eaten – it’s respected. It’s part tradition, part comfort, part national pride… and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of magic.
